Reproductive Healthcare in the Workplace
“Since Equity Labs attends to equitable workplaces, it is worthwhile to consider the collective power of an empowered and enraged workforce of folks with uteruses and their allies. Imagine if this community started to make choices about what states they wanted to live and work in.”
- Abortion Rights are Human Rights
Throughout the past year, we have seen reproductive rights fail to be protected in the United States. It has therefore become imperative that companies not remain complicit in the removal of reproductive healthcare protections.
We must consider the implications of the recent stripping of rights from employees and co-workers alike. Will the workforce begin to make decisions on where they work and live based on how they are supported? How can workplaces center those employees while providing aid, support, and allyship?
Organizations have the responsibility to consider how they can provide protections and resources to prioritize gender equity in the workplace. A part of the impact that the overturn of Roe v. Wade has had is the complicated state-by-state legislation with differing degrees of criminalization and bans for contraceptive measures that create additional barriers to access reproductive healthcare. Companies should consider the impacts of these localized bans in their advocacy for Reproductive Justice in the workplace.
The following white paper reviews the context of reproductive healthcare in the United States, the principles of Reproductive Justice as a model of change, and policy recommendations for the workforce to retain gender equity advancements.
